On Monday, November 26th, Support For Home’s Community Relations Manager, April Carni had the opportunity to promote the Music & Memory programs at Revere Court & Support For Home by appearing in a spot on the local Channel News 10 along with Casey Simon of Revere Court & Forrest Reed an avid community volunteer for the effort. Forrest’s personal story of how he implemented the program with his own mother & the joy & memories they shared together are truly inspiring and open the segment.
The spot feature’s how Revere Court has 40 residents on the program & how much joy they have implementing at their community. April also comments on how one of Support For Home’s Music & Memory clients could recall special memories of college which might not otherwise have been remembered if it were not for the song.
The news story can be seen by going to this web address:
To appreciate the feature more fully, it is important to understand the history of the Music & Memory program for those who have not heard about it.
The Music & Memory program was founded by Dan Cohen a Social Worker in 2006 based on a simple idea that if someday he ended up in a nursing home that he wanted to listen to his favorite music from the 60’s. It was this idea that lead Dan to creating personalized playlists & uploading them on an iPod for residents of a local nursing home. And after a lot of work and dedication he eventually received some funding to expand the program that ultimately resulted in the non-profit, Music & Memory in 2010 which now has a large national imprint. “Alive Inside” the Documentary Audience Award winner of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in 2014 is largely responsible for the expanding of the program nationwide and the growing awareness and acceptance of the value of music as therapy. The documentary can be seen on Netflix.
Support For Home is extremely pleased to be part of the ever-growing movement of the Music & Memory program here in Sacramento & surrounding counties & proud to be one of the early adopters of the program across the nation & the only in-home care agency locally implementing & bringing into the program into the homes of seniors who are at home.
Revere Court a premier Memory Care Community in Sacramento became Music & Memory certified in February of 2015 & Support For Home in March of 2015 and have been working together to spread the positive effects of the program ever since. April & Casey both have spoken at various community events about the positive effects of the programs both can be contacted to come out and do a presentation on the program to help spread the awareness. Forrest Reed produced a concert benefiting Music & Memory back in July for which will help expand the programs at both Revere Court, Support For Home & other Music & Memory programs in the area. Support For Home intends to even include those clients at home that have do not have Alzheimer’s or Dementia but other chronic diseases to enjoy the benefits as well.
