In the national State of Home Cooking Survey, 2.7 of every 10 respondents said they cook daily. Of the 2,000 people polled, only 68 percent cook four meals a week. Six percent admitted they never cook at all.
If your mom can’t or doesn’t like to cook, she’s in good company.
Eating out, ordering takeout, or purchasing ready-made meals at stores is costly and not the best way to eat healthily. Here are some of the better options you can rely on to make sure your mom is eating well.
See if She Qualifies for Meals on Wheels
Many communities have Meals on Wheels available to the elderly. A volunteer brings prepared meals to your mom’s home. There is often a per meal fee, but it’s worth it. Your mom has a meal and gains a little socialization while the volunteer brings in the bags.
Cook Her Meals For Her
One of the easiest ways to make sure she eats is by preparing her meals in advance. Store them in freezer bags or containers that she can heat up in the microwave. If she can use a slow cooker, you could have ingredients in freezer bags and ready to be poured into the cooker each morning.
Order Meal Kits
Many companies now offer meal kits that are sent to the home with dry ice to keep ingredients fresh. If your mom can cook but hates the prep work, these meal kits may help. Ingredients often come sliced and ready to use. Some do require a little slicing, so check with the company to make sure they do all the prep work.
Arrange Meal Delivery Services
See if there are any home catering companies in your mom’s area. These companies are usually privately owned. The chef prepares a weekly menu with a few choices. Meals are cooked to order and brought to the home. It can be a costly option, but it gives you control over the ingredients. Things like food allergies and special diets are followed when meals are prepared.
Set Up Meal Preparation Services
Elderly care agencies send caregivers to your mom’s home to help her with any activities that prove challenging. Caregivers can cook for your mom. A caregiver can eat with her, too, so she gains companionship at meal times. Learn more about this and other elderly care services by making a call.
